Wireless Printing with Ubuntu
Several weeks ago I purchased a Hewlett-Packard 4580 inkjet printer from TigerDirect. I'd set up a couple of wireless printers for clients and decided to get one myself. I have experimented with a Netgear print server which worked well on my Netgear router, but when I acquired a U.S Robotics router about six months ago and attempted to use its embedded print server I lost any ability to print wirelessly from my Ubuntu notebook. I finally got around to installing it on my home network today. The setup was quite easy. I have it connected to my other notebook which runs Windows XP Professional. The software that comes with the printer is for either Windows or Macintosh and it was setup in about fifteen minutes. I had to reconfigure the wireless which took about five minutes and then it was ready to be discovered by the Ubuntu notebook.
I went to System-->Administration-->Printing and had it search for a new printer. Ubuntu accomplished this piece very quickly, it recognized it as a HP 4500 series inkjet and of course since it's Ubuntu it installed all the necessary drivers very quickly. In less than one minute's time I was getting a test print. The 4580 is rated at 28 pages per minute in black and I have no problem believing that. I printed a six page PDF document in about 45 seconds. I'm impressed and I recommend both this printer and of course Ubuntu 9.04 to you.
