Lower maintenance cost

ShareThisI came across a good article at SolidOffice. The author asserts that open source desktops cost less to maintain. Microsoft Windows requires an anti-virus and even if that anti-virus is free, there is a cost associated with scanning the hardware. Even on a high end machine virus scanning takes up CPU cycles and slows down the operation of the hardware.  Open source software is of course free and product updates and upgrades don't carry a hidden cost.

Upgrading to Ubuntu 8.10

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 8.10 on my Dell 6400 notebook. I elected to do an in place upgrade from Ubuntu 8.04. Ubuntu has put together extremely well written documentation to guide you  through the process. As an experienced person who has done Windows upgrades I can assure you that upgrading Ubuntu is far easier and in my case was a snap.

Ubuntu 8.10 Server

ShareThisInteresting news that Ubuntu 8.10 Server edition has the tools to support virtualization out of the box. This could have a major impact on its acceptance. I've been a Ubuntu user since version 6.06 LTS. I'm currently running Ubuntu 8.04 on my Dell notebook which is my primary platform. I am going to download Ubuntu 8.10 server and test out its virtual machine capabilities.
Building on the Just Enough Operating System (JeOS) version launched last year, Ubuntu 8.10 ships with a Virtual Machine builder.
